Places to Visit in Karwar
Warship Museum
INS Chapal is currently a museum at Karwar. The INS Chapal
warship museum docked at the Rabindranath Tagore beach here since November
2006, In view of the Naval Base being set up in Karwar, the Defence Ministry
handed over the missile boat to the district administration.
It was bought from Russia.
It was categorised as a Missile boat. They came under the Osa class missile
boats.It was Commissioned by the Indian Navy in 1976 and decommissioned in
2004, INS Chapal patrolled the Indian sea coast. The
245-tonne ship (on full load) has a length of 38.6 metres, beam of 7.6 metres
and speed of 37 knots. The warship was used in the 1971 India-Pakistan war and
had destroyed many enemy ships. It served the Indian Navy for 24 years and was
active during the 1971 war against Pakistan.
Karwar Port
Karwar port is located at
Baithkol, Karwar Bay. Hills and coastal islands make the port a natural
harbour, sheltered from the Arabian sea. The port which is operated by the
Government of Karnataka, services the hinterland of northern Karnataka, Goa and
southern Maharashtra.
The length of the port is
355 metres (388 yd). The quay has two berths, with a draft capacity of 9.25
metres (30.3 ft). Karwar port also berths coastal vessels and there is a jetty
for fishing vessels.[18] The Government of Karnataka has planned to develop
Karwar port on a Public Private Partnership (PPP) basis to provide six
additional berths, a container terminal, and a rail link to Shirwad railway
station.
The port is able to handle
all types of commodities, including "B" and "C" class
petroleum products. There port has liquid storage tanks for bitumen, furnace
oil, molasses, and HSD. A ban of iron ore mining and export in Karnataka state
reduced congestion at the port. The port has arrangements for berthing coastal
vessels, and a jetty for fishing boats.
Guddali Peak , Karwar
While on a trip to Karwar,
travellers can choose to visit Guddali Peak that is around 6 km away from the
Karwar town if they have time at hand. This mountain peak is located at an
elevation of 1800 feet above sea level and surrounded by Belikeri River on the
west and Kali River on the east. Tourists can visit this site, which is amongst
the tallest peaks of Haiderghat Range, any time of the year. Travellers need to
take a 5 meter trek through the mountain jungle in order to reach Guddali Peak,
which offers an excellent view of the seashore and the town. According to
historians, this peak served as a summer resort to the British before
independence.
Kali river bridge
Kali
river bridge Built over the Kali River in the year 1986, Kali Bridge is
situated on NH17 just outside the town of Karwar. It connects Karnataka with
Goa and is considered to be the infrastructural pride of the state. It is
suggested that travellers going to Karwar should stop by it to enjoy the
awe-inspiring views of Karwar Beach, Sadashivgad Fort, mountains, sun-rise,
sun-set, river, sea, and islands. Moreover, the bridge overlooks the point
where Kali River joins the Arabian Sea, which is a sight to behold unto itself.
Oyster Rock Lighthouse
If time permits, tourists
can visit Oyster Rock Lighthouse, which is located on an island close to Karwar
amidst a forest, on their journey to the town. The light house had been
constructed on top of the Devad Gudda Island (Oyster Rock) during the 1860s by
the British. Travellers interested in visiting this light house can take
machine boats that are available from Karwar Port.
On 25th March 1864, this
light house became operational after optical equipment with four wick burners
was installed here. A dome on top of the lighthouse tower enables tourists to
view the entrance to the lantern room. The lantern was painted white instead of
red or orange in order to make sunrise and sunset more noticeable. An important
thing to be noted is that tourists looking forward to visit Oyster Rock Light
House need prior permission from authorities as the site is situated near the
defence project INS Kadamba.
Mudgeri Dam
Mudigeri Dam located in a
village of Karwar Taluka, Uttara Kannada district, Karnataka, India. It is
close to the historic fort of Sadashivgad located on Kali river. Konkani is
spoken as a local language.

small waterfall that flows underneath a huge rock.
Baithkol
Baithkol Village is situated on the coast in
the vicinity of the town. This village has taken its name from an Arabic word
'Bait-el-Khol' that stands for bay of safety. Baithkol village is renowned
among people for its Catholic Cemetery, British Cemetery and Baithkol Cove.
Upon reaching this village, travellers would discover the graves of Europeans
at the cemetery who had come to India to spread their kingdoms. Karwar Port,
counted amongst the best harbours across the glove, is situated in this village.
Siddeswar Temple
Shejjeswar Temple,
otherwise known as Siddeswar Temple,Gottegalli, is situated at a Distance of 4
km from Karwar Town. According to local belief, this pilgrimage site is counted
among the five temples that belong to the Gokarna mythology. Another popular
folklore says that the parts of Atmalinga that was taken away by the demon king
Ravan fell at Shejjeswar Temple. Thousands of devotees from all parts of the
country visit this temple during the occasion of Maha Shivratri.
Shirve Ghat
Apart from exploring
beautiful beaches, pilgrims are advised to visit Shirve Ghat that is situated
in proximity of Karwar Town.
Jamba
Hyder Ghat Pass
Hyder Ghat Pass is a prominent natural attraction of Karwar that
visitors may see while journeying through the town if time allows.
Durga Temple, Karwar
The 600 years old Durga
Temple, which is situated in Sadashivgad Hill Fort, is another renowned
pilgrimage site of Karwar. Sadashivgad lies on the northern bank of Kali River,
about 6 km from the city. According to popular local belief, Raja Shiv
Chatrapati found this temple and permitted the local Bhandari population to
offer prayers at the site. While on the way to Durga Temple, tourists will
discover the relics of old fort of Sonda kings. Also known as Shantadurga
Temple, it is located close to the 17th century Dargah of Peer Shan Shamsuddin
Kharobat. For accommodation, the Department of Tourism has established Yatri
Nivas at top of Sadashivgad Hill.
Maruti Temple,Karwar
Travellers may choose to
visit the Maruti Temple situated 8 km away from the town of Karwar if time
permits. Numerous pilgrims visit this temple to offer prayers to Lord Ganapati.
It is best known among tourists for its 'Rangoli Festival' that is influenced
by rangoli art. At the time of this festival, people decorate roads surrounding
the Maruti Temple with colourful patterns. Different rangoli designs make the
temple a rangoli art gallery that attracts visitors in large numbers. Tourists
can explore innovative and beautiful rangoli designs that are created by local
artists during this festival. Rangoli designs at Maruti Temple usually include
gods and goddesses, sport personalities, famous actors and politicians, to name
a few.
Naganath temple
One of the very famous and
unique places of the region, Naganath temple is conserved under the Ancient
Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act of 1958. The tourists can
find thousands of people worshipping an anthill in this temple. It holds high
religious values amongst the natives.
