Haliyal is a Panchayat town(Taluk) in Uttara Kannada in the Indian state of Karnataka. It is the headquarters town for Haliyal Taluka. It can be classified as a main-road town. The NH-63 (India) highway passes through it.Haliyal constituted in 1865, Haliyal is a around 10 Km North-east of Karnantaka and 44 Kms from Hubli.Nearest Airport is Hubli Airport

Tribal Communities

Sidhis are said to have been brought by the Portuguese from Africa as slaves some four hundred years ago. Their population is around ten thousand and are generally found in Haliyal.Halakki Vokkaligas living in the foot of Western Ghats are known as the "Aboriginals of Uttara Kannada". Their distinctiveness and backwardness are too obvious. They have administrative system of their own and the headman is called "Gouda". Their way of living is still ancient and need amalgamation with the main stream. The men are practically naked at home and the women decorated with beads and necklaces, heavy nose rings have distinct attire.Goulis are a nomadic tribes migrated from Maharashtra. They are mainly cow and goat rearers. They stay on the fringes of forest. Some have taken up agriculture.Kunabis are said to be the most backward of the tribals of Uttara Kannada District.. They live in small groups deep inside forests in bamboo huts built in a row sharing common walls. Not having access to the medical facilities due to seclusion, mortality rate among them is very high.Gonds live mainly in the forests of Bhatkal taluk. They live off forest products. They have rich folk culture of tribal dance

Attractions

Shri Tulaja temple is Main attaraction in Haliyal,The place has an ornate Mallikarjuna Temple in the Fort. The other temples of the town are the Maruti, Pete Basaveshwara, Venkataramana, Shri Rama and Dattatreya. The place has six Mosques and three Darghas, and among these, the Kasaba area Mosque is considerably old. The building is ascribed to the Adil Shahi times. The Durga of Umar Ali, Saint of Adil Shai days, attracts a large gathering during its annual Urs held ten days after Bakrid in the month of Zul Haj. The place has a Roman Catholic Church locally called church of the lady of miracles built in 1889.

Dandeli is a small town in Haliyal Taluk, Uttaraka Kannada district,most of the area covered by thick forest so dadeli is called tourists heaven,other cities like Ambikanagar,Joida also situated nearby, Goa is easily reachable from dandeli.

History

A local legend states that the city is named after Dandelappa, a local deity, a servant of the Mirashi landlords, who lost his life because of his loyalty. An alternative legend states that a king named Dandakanayaka passed through the forests and named them after himself, and the city is believed to stand on the place where Dandakaranya stood when he named the area.

As per the 1930 census, the population of Dandeli was only 515 and predominantly worked in the forestry department and government saw mill. Most residents belonged to the Konkanis, Devali, Marathas, Kuruba, Lambani, Negro, and Muslim communities. The settlement was located on the bank of the Kali river and developed into an industrial town with the establishment of a number of companies, including Indian Plywood Mill, Lalbhai Ferro-manganese Factory, West Coast Paper Mill, Indian Saw Mill, and a number of small industries around the Dandeli and Karnataka Power Corporation which were engaged in the construction of several power-generating dams at different places along the Kali river. The place was later called Old-Dandeli.

Dandeli is a natural habitat for wildlife, including tigers, leopards, black panthers, elephants, gaur, deer, antelopes, and bears.It is the second largest wildlife sanctuary in Karnataka  and was designated as a tiger reserve in 2007. The jungle is also home to several varieties of reptiles and almost 300 varieties of birds.The rapid expansion of industry has raised fears of ecological damage to the area, and local volunteer groups have formed to address the issue.

Attractions

Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary-The sanctuary provides rafting opportunities at the Virnoli Rapids connected to the Kali River. Other tourist activities include nature walks, boating, bird watching, crocodile spotting and angling. Nearby tourist spots include Ulavi, Syntheri Rocks, Anashi National Park, and Moulangi.
