Sri Marikamba Temple of
Sirsi is a famous Devi shrine situated in northern part of the state of
Karnataka. The temple is highly regarded by the devotees spread not just all
over Karnataka but also in the neighboring states of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.
According to local belief, the wooden statue
of Goddess Shri Marikamba, the deity worshipped in Uttara and Dakshin Kannada,
was found in a tank on the outskirts of the town. In 1611, Sadashiva Rao II,
the King of Sonda, gave orders to install the wooden deity at this place. This
idol is considered to be the biggest idol and site devoted to Marikamba in
Karnataka.
Sirsi
Marikamba temple is temple famous for its Kavi art. The Sirsi Marikamba temple
is decorated with Kavi art on both sides of its walls. Close to the Marikamba
temple are the temples dedicated to Maha Ganapati and Shri Gopalakrishna.
The
annual chief festivals are Navaratri, Deepavali, Kartik Illumination and
Jayanti. A short stay in the temple on such occasions will give one an idea of
the congregetion of devotees.
Special Event:
The 319-year-old temple
fair is held once in two years. Goddess Marikamba is carried from the temple to
a place called 'Marikamba gadduge' on a beautiful wooden 'Ratha' and the
goddess will be kept seated there for seven days. Markikamba fair is one of the
biggest 'Car festivals' in Karnataka. People from all over Karnataka visit
Sirsi to see this festival.
