Sadashivagad

Sadashivagad

Sadashivagad(Sadashivgarh) is situated in Uttara Kannada District, 6 Kms from Karwar on the northern bank of River Kali. Crossing the magnificent Kali bridge you reach Sadashivagad, a place of historical importance. There are ruins of old fort of Sonda kings. Midway on the Sadashivagad hill is the 600 yrs old Shantadurga Temple, known for its serenity. From the peak of the hill, the view of the sun setting in the Arabian sea, is an experience in itself.

A Yatri nivas is being built on top of the hill by Dept. of Tourism

The history rolls back to the year 1715, when the Fort of Sadashivgad was built, under the rule of King BasavaLinga of Sonda Dynasty. Naming it after his father, King Sadashiva, it had a prominent place, historically and mythologically. The existence of Goddess Durgamma, falls back even behind 1500 in chronological order. The Great Maratha Ruler, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj had visited this place twice, 1665 and 1673, and captured all coastal parts of Uttar Kannada.  Sadashivgad fort was one of them. Shivaji Maharaj was a devotee of Goddess Durgamma.

The fort has witnessed a transfer of power, from Sondas, Kadambas, Portuguese, Maratha, British. After Treaties and wars, Portuguese obtained the possession of the fort and then the East India Company got the control over the Fort in the year 1799. The stone made crest of the British Crown found on the top of the main entrance gate, displayed here, speaks of the British supremacy for number of years.

The Ancient monument of Durgamma was rebuilt and restored in 1928 by the reputed navigators of the old Rulers. The 11 canon's at the Temple's entrance unfolds the vibrant history of this fort.

Guddalli Peak

Guddalli nearly 6kms fro karwar town, very good for trekking. In guddalli there are some houses of Halakki people. They're cooperative and friendly. From hilltop very beautiful panorama view, we can see, and amazing sunset view. Only thing is it better to visit guddalli in group.
